1. College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Oyo State

The University of Ibadan is located in Ibadan in Oyo State and is the first and oldest degree-awarding institution in Nigeria.

The Faculty of Medicine was one of the first faculties present when the University College, Ibadan was established in 1948.

University College Ibadan (its initial name) faced many challenges then, as it was the first in the country. It had no institution to use a case study, so the British did only what they could.

The university’s College of Medicine struggled to maintain the standard. Also, it wasn’t recognized by employers, since not everyone knew the relevance of university education back then.

Note that the University was built to get aligned with the University of London. When it was time for graduation, all the students in the College of Medicine were awarded the degree of MBBS from the University of London.

On their certificate, it says the University of London, but they actually did study in Ibadan. The first set of students that furthered outside the country for their clinical training in 1950 graduated in 1954.
